Successful completion of an advanced degree in psychology can open many doors in psychology graduate jobs. Depending on individual career goals, psychology graduate students have the option to complete either a PhD or a Psy.D degree. Ph.D graduates typically pursue jobs with an emphasis on scientific research. Psychology graduates with a Psy.D degree often work jobs in a clinical setting providing therapy. CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY


Clinical psychology graduate jobs involve working closely with other medical professionals in treating patients. A clinical psychologist may work in a hospital, helping the patients and their family members cope with various injuries, disabilities and emotional or behavioral abnormalities. A licensed clinical psychologist spends a good deal of time and effort developing methodologies to help maneuver specific patient behaviors in a more healthy and positive direction. Psychology graduate jobs in counseling are prevalent in areas of education, specifically school districts, career counseling centers, or individual schools at the primary, secondary or college level. The role of the school psychologist in a K-12 environment is to work with individual students to help them get the maximum potential out of their education and also to address existing behavioral problems.

This type of job in psychology requires in-depth knowledge of classroom teaching techniques, and school counselors need to frequently update this part of their training as education trends continue evolving. This allows them to work closely with teachers and administrators in order to determine how to best improve student learning. Counselors can also work in college career centers, helping students determine the job fields that best suit their personalities and interests.

ORGANIZATIONAL/INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY

For graduates who are interested in the dynamics of the workplace, psychology graduate jobs in this field will definitely appeal to them. Organizational/industrial psychologists frequently work as consultants for a wide variety of companies in order to improve areas such as employee performance and productivity. These types of psychologists often research and develop employee training programs as well as conduct interviews for potential job candidates. They can also work with upper management on administrative concerns.

Research and Development


Developmental psychologists focus on specific behavior patterns that occur throughout various stages of life, such as learning and interaction with others. Much of the focus in this field is on development of disabilities at different ages. The field of research psychology is closely related to developmental psychology in terms of examining areas of human behavior such as motivation and attention span. Research-based jobs for both of these areas of psychology are usually in settings such as government agencies, corporations or non-profit groups.
