"Your Profile Is The Window To Your Soul" - "PART 3"...

At the beginning of this three-part series about your dating profile, I mentioned that you should think about what types of topics you would TALK ABOUT WITH A STRANGER you may have interest in, at a comfortable location or environment. If you think back to these types of circumstances in your past, you know "what you do for a living" will be brought in to the conversation within 5-10 minutes of meeting for the first time.

Again, be careful how you talk about your job or career. If you act too nervous you will scare them off, and if you act like you don't care you will look lazy. DON'T GET ME WRONG - You're not looking to land a new job, you're looking for someone to date or spend time with, then maybe start a relationship down the road.

IMPORTANT NOTE - If you have children, you should definitely talk about them in your profile!

You should tell age and make sure you mention if they live with you or not. You can bring up SPECIFIC about them like "I have a 10 year old daughter who lives with her mother in Kansas City, and she loves to dance." However, don't overdo it. It's very easy to get carried away talking about your children. Just remember, this profile is about you.

Another topic to be sure to talk about would be pets. If you have a pet it's likely very important to you, especially while you are single and live alone. If for no other reason, make sure to mention pets. This will help you to avoid someone with an allergy to your specific type of pet. REMEMBER TO USE YOUR FILTERS. Make sure you tell them about your pets. Again, this isn't something you want to overdo. Something like: "I have a friendly 2 year old male chocolate lab named Riley, who enjoys going to the park with me."

Obviously, mention any hobbies or activities you like to engage in. Mention any civic or professional groups you may belong to as well.

Always be sure to mention EXACTLY what you are looking for in a relationship within the ad. If you're looking for a serious or long-term relationship don't be afraid to say so. If you're just looking to date around and have some NO STRINGS ATTACHED fun, don't be afraid to say so. Remember, the goal of the ad is to attract the type of people who are looking for the same things as you.

You don't want someone who is looking for a serious relationship contacting you if that's not what you want, and vice versa. I can't stress enough how important using filters are in the process.

THINGS TO AVOID IN YOUR MEMBER DATING PROFILE

You can start by avoiding complaints and negative information in your profile - not matter what. The bottom line, if you are going to BITCH TO PERFECT STRANGERS about what bothers you. What would it be like when they date you?! People will assume you will just bitch all of the time, and NOBODY wants that, when they start a potential relationship

People in an online dating society are looking for POSITIVE, UPBEAT, AND FUN people to spend their time with, period. Examples: "Is there just one good guy still out there for me?", "All men suck" - Or - "I can't stand the women at bars, so I decided to try dating online." I don't care if you really feel this way, it can't be in your dating profile or people will simply IGNORE YOU EXIST. This action alone will increase you chance of being looked at in a more positive light.

Another big thing to avoid in your profile are generalities. I'm sure you've heard these before: "I'm a really fun, outgoing, person who likes to eat out and go to the movies and take walks on the beach." This is just a profile makeover waiting to happen, or more to the point, a profile that gets PASSED OVER very quickly.

The most important thing to do in your profile is: "BE UNIQUE"

Be unique. Instead of saying "I like to go to the movies", say: "My favorite movie is The Godfather. It's my favorite movie because you can't go wrong with Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, and Al Pacino acting in the same movie. I think the acting, the cinematography, the musical score, and the writing are superior, even to most movies released today." Which sounds better to you?

One more example, instead of "I like going out to eat", use, "When it comes to eating, I really like to go to Fred's Place. My favorite sandwich there is the Philly Steak Sub. The steak is mouth-watering; it's always cooked to perfection. They always put a heaping pile of mozzarella cheese on it. The freshly chopped green peppers and onions are the perfect topper to this delicious sandwich. Do you get the picture?

Use your profile to its FULLEST POTENTIAL. Don't be afraid to throw some humor in. However, only use humor if it's natural to you. Some people just don't have a flair for humor, and that's okay if that's how you are. The biggest piece of advice about writing your profile I can give, is just BE YOURSELF. Don't try to be something or someone you're not. You won't attract the right type of people by doing it. You'll only be cheating yourself.

I hope this three-part article on dating profiles has helped you.
