The Italian actress slash fashion model is as internationally renowned (how do you become renowned by the way - is there a ceremony?) for her feminine attributes as she is for provocative female fatale film roles.
Born in the Italian village of Citt`a di Castello, Bellucci originally pursued a career within the legal profession, enrolling at the University Perugia. It was while she was at University that she decided to model on the side to earn some extra pocket money, but it wasn't long before she was swayed away from the stuffy legal eagles to mix in more showbiz type circles.
Her first international film role was in 1992's Bram Stokers Dracula, where she played Dracula's Bride. It was a small part and it wasn't until 1996's L'appartement, a French thriller for which she won the French equivalent of an Oscar nomination, that she really came to the attention of the film world.
A horde of European and American film work was channelled to the Bellucci after her nomination and noteworthy roles include the Italian film Malena and French film Irreversible. We best remember her turn as Persephone in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions (2003) - a GG favourite.
In the epic film series she plays the wife of The Merovingian/The Frenchman. Persephone is bored with her existence in the Matrix and disaffected by the adulterous ways of her husband. With revenge in mind, she offers to help the central character, Neo, but only if he kisses her with the same passion he kissed Trinity - hussy! Though to be fair, we would have totally requested the same in her position.
Monica is currently starring in Disney's The Sorcerer's Apprentice as Veronica, a powerful sorceress who is also the love interest of the movie's main character, Balthazar, played by Nicolas Cage. Monica will also be starring alongside your August Man of the Month, Benedict Cumberbatch (delish!) in The Whistleblower, out later this year.
BELLUCCI FACTS:
Bellucci isn't just a pretty face - she's fluent in Italian, English, French and Spanish.
Sophia Loren and Claudia Cardinale are her thespian inspirations.
She has a wax statue in the Grevin Museum in Paris. Dammit, we'd like a GG statue somewhere cool too!
Monica was chosen by Empire magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history (#35). [2007].
Bellucci was four months pregnant with her daughter L'eonie when she completed filming The Whistleblower (2010). Hardcore.
