"Their Eyes were Watching God" has been variously described as feminist prose (little on paper in 1930), African-American prose (little the story is about people, first and original, and outline is less important to the crisp) and as a purposeless masterpiece. It's a purposeless masterpiece. Thanks to Alice Backpacker and Oprah Winfrey, the book was brought back to the public's attention.
One of the issues with reading Hurston's crisp is that it's on paper in dialect--in Hurston's appraisal of how Southern Florida black idiolect may possibly be spelled out to her. So reading the book is a bit slow; you have a meal to clank out the words in your mind. If this is a problem, plus I'd plan you furrow to the book on tape (ingeniously performed by Burgundy Dee) and plus read the book afterwards.
The story has unimportant a plot; Janey is a young woman whose grandmother was untrained in slavery.
